Policy Workshops

BCARS hosts regular policy workshops to facilitate discussion on the Syrian refugee crisis between key government, aid organization, academic, and refugee community representatives. Each workshop produces a policy recommendations document for addressing the Syrian refugee crisis.

Thessaloniki, Greece - May, 2017: BCARS has summarized its findings in a collection of 3 regional, 3 national, and 3 local policy recommendations drawing from ongoing workshops and field research on refugees in Greece that began in 2016. With the Balkans Route to EU destination countries closing, Greece is transitioning from a hard worn transit country to a stressed de facto resettlement country, with new policy challenges.

Amman, Jordan - 2015-2017: BCARS has summarized its findings in a collection of 3 regional, 3 national, and 3 local policy recommendations drawing from ongoing workshops and field research on refugees in Jordan that began in 2015. Data visualizations compare refugee hosting populations in Jordan with other regional states and the EU.

BCARS-UNHCR Jordan, Amman

Amman, Jordan - 2016-2017: BCARS partnered with Anna Gaunt and Laura Buffoni of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees - Jordan's Livelihoods Division, to host a series workshops and research on the Syrian refugee work permit program. The outcome document, titled "The Work Permit Initiative for Syrian Refugees in Jordan: Implications for Policy and Practice," aims at providing a critical overview and analysis of the implementation of the work permit initiative for Syrian refugees in Jordan. It is targeted to practitioners who are implementing livelihood and related programming for Syrian refugees in Jordan following the February 2016 Supporting Syria and the Region donor conference in London. It is also intended for the general public, particularly in academic and policymaking fields, who are interested in livelihood programming and work permit initiatives for refugees.

Belgrade, Serbia - 21 July, 2016: BCARS partnered with Vuk Jeremic of the Centre for International Relations and Sustainable Development (CIRSD) to host a policy workshop on the refugee crisis in the Balkans region with participants from regional government ministries, the international aid community, policy advisors, and local aid workers.

Brussels, Belgium - 2 May 2016: BCARS partnered with the University of Kent, Brussels, and the University of Maastricht, Brussels to host a policy workshop on the refugee crisis in the European Union region with participants from regional government ministries, the international aid community, policy advisors, and local aid workers.
